  • Explore the realms of expression, imagination, and creation resulting in new knowledge.

  • Learn music and to share in musical experiences.

  • Understand that music is a universal language.
  • Promotes critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, discipline, creativity, self-esteem, skills that transfer to all other academics and other aspects of daily life through adulthood.
  • Promote the enjoyment of music by creating, performing and/or listening.
  • Ensure that the adult life of every student is enriched by the skills, knowledge, and habits acquired in the study of music.
  • Value the aesthetic nature of the musical arts.

The mission of OSSU Music Education is to ensure that every student is educated in the skills and knowledge of music while increasing cultural awareness, creative and critical thinking, and personal appreciation of musical arts throughout life.

Learning Principles

What are the Best practices in instruction and learning for student in music?

For each one what should we expect to see the students doing and what should we see the teachers doing?

  • Students learn best when they have sufficient time and experience with various music genres and resources. Therefore, students will have access to and practice with a variety of resources (Instruments, varied repertoire, technology).
  • Students learn best when they make connections through their interests, strengths and prior knowledge. Therefore, students will have opportunities for choice and differentiated instruction.
  • Students learn best when they create music. Therefore, students will create music in ensemble groups and individually using voice, instruments and technology.
  • Students learn best when they perform music. Therefore, students will perform music in ensemble groups and individually using voice and instruments for an audience.
  • Students learn best when they respond to music. Therefore, students will respond to music through movement, self-assessment, and listening.
  • Students learn best when musical arts are integrated with other content areas. Therefore, we will intentionally foster the use of connections and common language to help students transfer their music skills and background knowledge to other content areas.
  • Students learn best when assessment informs and drives music instruction. Therefore, assessments will be on-going and varied including summative, formative and self-assessment tools to differentiate instruction.
  • Students learn best when partnerships exist between home, school and community. Therefore, teachers will foster positive relationships around music with students, families and community members.
